Extra-Curricular
Chess:
Chatham’s Chess Kids program provides children with an opportunity to develop cognitive skills including problem solving, concentration and memory. Chess Kids is facilitated by an experienced instructor and sessions involve both the theory and application of chess skills. Chess Kids accommodates both beginners and students with more advanced chess skills, and is available to students in Grades 1 to 6.
Gateways:
In addition to providing a variety of enriching and extending
teaching approaches within our school programs, Chatham Primary School
accesses external providers to assist in our goal of stimulating and
challenging activities for students recognised as gifted and talented
in one or more areas. It is our aim to provide opportunities for
children of “like-minds” to participate in programs that will challenge
them intellectually and help develop their individual talents beyond
the classroom. GATEWays is our primary provider and runs several
programs throughout the year covering a variety of learning areas such
as English, Maths, Art, Technology, History. Chatham has provided a
location for some of these programs and plans to continue this in order
to make the programs more easily accessible for our students.
Social Service:
The whole school community is encouraged to support our Social Service
program which is designed to encourage students’ awareness of those
less fortunate than themselves. The school traditionally sponsors a
World Vision child and weekly social service collections are primarily
aimed at raising funds for him. In addition, the Junior School Council
makes decisions about specific fund-raising events through-out the year
to support other charities. These have, as a priority, a focus on
assisting children, and some recent examples include 40 Hour Famine,
State School Relief Fund, Red Nose Day and Starlight Foundation.
Finally, individual students may approach the JSC seeking funds or
awareness raising assistance for an issue associated with a member of
the school community.
