Physical Education
The development and refinement of fundamental motor skills, the precursors to sports specific skills are practiced.
These include:
| Run | Jump | Leap | |
| Dodge | Catch | Single-Handed Strike | Kick |
| Two-Handed Strike | Punt | Bounce |
Students also complete units on ball handling and control, moving
into space and begin to play minor games to introduce them to team
sport. Sport specific skills are introduced in the later years of the
junior school. A gymnastic unit is undertaken to help students gain
body awareness and control.
Values such as sportsmanship,
and fair play are emphasised to make sure that enjoyment is had by all,
leading to a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity.
Fitness and diet are also discussed to develop attitudes towards fitness.
Senior School
Sports specific skills are the main focus from grades 4 to 6. These
skills are practiced, and then rehearsed in a modified game until grade
6 when students play unmodified games as part of interschool sport.
Athletics is a major focus in the upper year levels, with sprinting,
hurdling, long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus and shot put making
up the unit. A house Athletics carnival will be run this year.
Fitness units are completed, with a focus on making students aware of
their own fitness levels and how to maintain and improve personal
health and fitness. Students in grades 4 to 6 are also given the
opportunity to try out for district swimming, cross country and
athletics carnivals.
Grade 6 students all compete in interschool sport, which is made up of the following sports:
| Cricket | Football | Rounders | Netball |
| Newcombe | Tee Ball | Softball |
The philosophy behind Physical Education at Chatham is achievement through enjoyment. This is attained by providing a learning environment in which participation is maximised and children are able to practice their skills whilst enjoying themselves in a warm, friendly environment.
